I am going to take this opportunity to introduce a new member to the family - our new pet guinea pig. She was brought home a little over 2 weeks ago on December 22nd, 2008 and we're still deciding on a name for her. This is all fairly trivial as she doesn't exactly respond to a name as of yet. We also are not sure of exactly how old she is as the place we purchased her from takes guinea pigs by length/size requirements as opposed to age. However, we're fairly certain that she is anywhere from 4-6 months which means she's still a baby.
Guinea Pigs actually possess a very calm demeanor and usually remain non-aggressive. They're not too difficult to take care of, either, which makes them ideal for kids, too, especially as their first pet (technically this is my brother's first pet - and a sort of a transitory pet before we get a dog). The best way to describe them is being like bunnies but more responsive and comfortable with humans.
Only time she was freaked out was the first two days but calmed down immensely following the third day. She coos, squeaks, chirps, and purrs when content (usually when you pet her) and over the past few days, not only has she been particularly affectionate, but she's even begun to "communicate" by nuzzling the neck of people she's comfortable with, gnashing her teeth when she's hungry, and backing up/becoming more frantic when she needs to take care of "serious bidness."
Not many pictures have been taken of her but here are a from when she took her first bath a few days ago. :) She is absolutely precious and everyone comments on not only her calm demeanor but also on how soft her fur is.
Happy New Year, everyone!
